Satellite phones, and choices, are becoming more and more prevalent and complex every day. If you have a mission critical need and money plays very little part, satellite internet can be almost as fast as the fastest broadband with Inmarsat* “FLEET 500” at a designed 500 Kbs the fastest. With yearly rates costing as much as  $50,000 plus, it is the domain of luxury yachts, cruise ships and large important company operations. Land based a system called BGAN performs equally if not better and once again is the industrial system of choice. An affordable Marine version of BGAN/vsat will be available shortly, Watch this space!

Going down the list is Fleet 250, 125, 66, 33 the numerical notation being the Kilobytes per second speed.

At this time (June 2010), the other carriers namely Globalstar, Iridium, Mobilesat, Inmarsat mini M and Inmarsat M are very poor performers on internet, if at all, though at least one carrier (Globalstar) is offering good news in this respect when they launch their new satellite “constellation this year. Delay are expected as a key component manufacturing plant was situated in the Earth quake zone in Italy and was destroyed **Globalstar has advised that funding is in place and launch vehicles have been booked to allow this to happen about third quarter this year.

Thuraya  is so far the shining light with GPRS soon available with planned speeds up to 60 Kbs but competitors are hot on their tail.

If you still need the good old fax facility this only offered on the Inmarsat and Optus Mobilesat (and in the future on Thuraya) choices. For voice (and in some cases SMS) the remaining services offered by Globalstar, Iridium and Thuraya offer fairly competitive services. In news just to hand a Thuraya marine unit will be available soon see details below. See the guide below for recommendations for various applications.

VSAT/SEATEL

The high tech fully compensated gyroscopic dish in its 1.2 metre waterproof Radome ensures perfect sight with severe pitch and roll conditions and is also the perfect adjunct for imagery down load needed for our GEOEYE software oceanography tool.

VSAT SEATEL is available though us as a business partner with Australian Satellite services based in Adelaide
